Empowering early career emergency medicine physicians to conduct transformative research in the neurological sciences.
The Neuro-EM Scholars Program is committed to recruiting, mentoring, training, and supporting early career emergency medicine researchers across the United States. The program aims to increase the number of physician-scientists capable of performing NIH-funded research focused on neurological disorders commonly treated in the pre-hospital and emergency department settings.
K12 Program
The K12 program is open to clinically practicing emergency medicine physicians within their first two years of a faculty position.
K12 scholars receive up to 3 years of financial support from the Neuro-EM Scholars Program, including dedicated research time (75% effort). Scholars complete their research and career development activities at their home institution with support by a local mentorship team.
In the 2 years following program completion, scholars are required to have at least 50% dedicated research time guaranteed by their home department to ensure transition to independence.
The K12 program is funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with additional funding possible from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Pipeline Program
The Pipeline Program provides advance training for early career investigators who are not yet eligible or ready to apply for the K12 program.
Those chosen for the program are invited to attend the Neuro-EM Scholars Retreat, and travel/lodging costs are reimbursed.
Emergency medicine senior residents, fellows, and first year faculty are eligible for this program.
Pipeline candidates must be nominated by their chair, division chief, or program director.
The Pipeline Program is funded by the National Foundation of Emergency Medicine.
Career Development Resources
The Neuro-EM Scholars Program hosts an annual Retreat for funded scholars, K12 applicants, and Pipeline participants.
The program also provides research training webinars that are open to the research community as well as additional resources for early-stage emergency medicine researchers.
